Skip Europe This Summer: This Shopping Village in Tennessee Is Just as Charming as an Italian Market Square

Are you dreaming of a trip to Europe this summer? Of course, Europe has delicious food and charming villages with cobblestone streets and magnificent architecture. One favorite memory of my trip to France is strolling narrow, windy streets with a toasty crepe filled with Nutella and strawberries. It was as lovely as it sounds. However, traveling to Europe often comes with a hefty commitment—a high price tag, jet lag, and a long journey. We've uncovered a shopping village in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with all the charm of Europe, but you don't even have to leave the state to get there. The Village is a shopping center bursting with so much European appeal that you'll feel confident skipping Europe and trying this attraction instead.

Two Gatlinburg business owners, David Dych of Ole Smokey Candy Kitchen and Jim Gerding of the Pancake Pantry, and their families thoughtfully designed The Village decades ago. Dych and Gerding bought the property in 1965 and took years to collect ideas and inspiration while traveling for the shopping complex. They ultimately decided to emulate the style of faraway places and collected building materials like roofing slates, heavy doors, light fixtures, and antique moldings from buildings being razed. They opened 18 shops in 1970 and nine more in 1982. The Village's 27 shops are thriving and offer visitors an array of gift items, toys, apparel, jewelry, decor, food, beverages, and more.

The shops are nestled along cobblestone walkways lined with flower beds, benches, and trees. The complex has an authentic telephone booth and fountains, adding to the delightful atmosphere. The shops feature stunning architectural elements reminiscent of Europe, including tall lampposts, arched windows, and stone walls.

Visitors can enjoy the scenery while stopping in boutiques like Candle Cottage, Celtic Heritage, The Sock Shop, Showcase Sports, and The Day Hiker. The Hayloft sells leather boots, hats, and apparel, and The Silver Tree sells beautiful sterling silver jewelry. Toy Crazy has a wide selection of engaging, hands-on toys; it is the perfect place to pick up a souvenir for your favorite little ones back home.

Just like in Europe, there is no shortage of delicious foods and treats in The Village. Coffee & Company is the perfect place to pick up a hot cup of coffee, while The Donut Friar has swoon-worthy donuts and pastries. Boudicca's Celtic Pub serves Fish & Chips, Bangers N' Mash, an array of burgers, and more. It also has a kids' menu and a pet's menu, with an unseasoned grilled Chopped Steak.
