1. Oakwood Cemetery (a.k.a. "Hell's Gate") - Spartanburg, SC
There's no doubt about the hauntings at this cemetery. It's very old and established and has a history of the spirits draining energy from the batteries of items like cell phones and cameras - and flashlights! It used to be a favorite spot for vandals who, reportedly, dug up a grave and stole a skull. You can speculate that that didn't help to calm the spirits here at this Spartanburg Cemetery, nicknamed "Hell's Gate" due to all of the paranormal activity that goes on.
2. St. Philips Graveyard - Charleston, SC
This graveyard in Charleston's historic downtown reportedly is visited by the apparition of a woman crying over a grave. Others have heard a small child, almost a baby, crying here.
3. Duncan's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery - Greenville, SC
The Children's Cemetery here can be a sad and terrifying place to visit. Reports of crying, voices and footsteps have been given by various people at different times.
4. Graniteville Cemetery - Graniteville, SC
Everything from screams to laughter have been heard at this old cemetery.
5. Blakeney Cemetery - Pageland, SC
The final resting place of Captain John Blakeney and family has some paranormal activity. Some say apparitions of family members have been spotted at this family plot.
6. The grave of Alice Flagg at All Saints Church - Pawleys Island, SC
The disembodied soul with the broken heart of the Grand Strand's most famous ghost, Alice Flagg is often seen walking around here dressed in white with her hand over her heart. Her family saw to it that she was separated from the love of her life because his social stature was beneath them. She was sent away to boarding school where she got sick and died of Malaria. Her family discovered a ring on her body when it arrived for burial. Reportedly, her brother ripped the ring from her dead body and threw it in the marsh. The ghost of Alice Flagg has also been spotted in the marsh...looking for her ring.
7. Cottageville Cemetery - Cottageville, SC
The spirits of the deceased, according to lore, will rise from their graves and become visible to any visitor who circles the cemetery three times and then honks their horn from the middle of the graveyard. We'd love to hear if this is actually true.
8. Abandoned graveyard (name unknown) in the woods - Hartsville, SC
According the the website hauntedplaces.org, there's an old unmarked haunted cemetery in the woods near the abandoned Lincoln Village apartments. Not much other information can be found about this cemetery.
9. Rock Presbyterian Church Cemetery - Greenwood, SC
Folks report seeing mysterious white mists and hearing disembodied sounds at this graveyard in Greenwood.
10. Rembert Church Cemetery - Sumter, SC
Weird things have been reported by visitors to this cemetery in Sumter, including hearing singing coming from inside the church when it appears no one is there.
11. Phillips Cemetery (a.k.a. Sansbury Cemetery) - Timmonsville, SC
The biggest haunting reported here is a nagging sense of despair that visitors report being hit with upon arrival.
Spooky stuff. But creepy is also exciting. With the history of South Carolina, including the many battles, the illnesses that hit like malaria and who knows how many people who could have been buried alive before there was a scientific way to determine absolute death, there stands to reason that the Palmetto State has more than its fair share of haunted cemeteries.
