When people think of castles they immediately get a picture in their mind of fairytale-like stone structures, soaring towers, as well as kings and queens. People may not think there are castles in South Carolina. However, there are several around the state that may not be as grandiose as those found in other regions or countries, but they are just as noteworthy. Let's have a look at these castles which are wonderful hidden gems in South Carolina.

1. Castle Pinckney, Mt. Pleasant

2. Atalaya Castle, Pawleys Island

Built on Huntington Beach Near Murrell's Inlet, SC, between 1931-1933 as a winter home for Anna Hyatt Huntington, an American Sculptor, and her husband. This Spanish-style castle boasts 30 rooms. 3. Castle Mugdock, Sullivan's Island

Have you ever dreamed of staying in a castle? 4. Old Jail Castle, Walterboro

Built in 1856 as a jail, this castle boasts crenelated parapets, turrets, and a massive central tower. The jail closed in 1937 and the building has since been used as a museum (which has since moved) and county offices. This castle is currently home to the Colleton County Probate Court.

5. The "Castle," Beaufort

Although, not a 'true' castle, this magnificent mansion is a noteworthy addition to this list. It was built in 1860 and has 23 rooms along with eight fireplaces. It's referred to as the "Castle" due to the moat-like effect of the Beaufort River that runs beside the property and serves as a private residence.
