This Rhode Island Mansion Is Among The Most Haunted Places In The Nation
Seaview Terrace in Newport, also known as Carey Mansion, is renowned for its size, history, and paranormal activity.
Seaview Terrace in Newport is a marvel for its sheer size and scale. It also holds many fascinating stories and is said to be the home of several ghosts and spirits. Let's take a closer look at one of the most haunted places in Rhode Island.
Also known as the Carey Mansion, the 40,000-square-foot mansion was built in 1907 and is the largest privately-owned Gilded Age "summer cottage."
The house was built by liquor baron Edson Bradley and originally took up an entire city block in DuPont Circle in Washington D.C. They decided to move to Newport and had the entire house dismantled and completely reassembled along the Cliff Walk. This incredible feat was featured in "Ripley's Believe It Or Not."
But behind the imposing front door lies a number of unexplained mysteries that make it one of the most haunted houses in Rhode Island.
Disembodied voices and random banging are just a few things that go on.
The most prominent spirit in the house is the wife of the original owner, Mrs. Bradey. She didn't want to leave her beloved house and is often seen playing her favorite Estey organ.
You can almost see ghosts drifting through the walls of the mansion's gothic Great Hall and phantom footsteps have been heard by visitors. That's enough to send chills down your spine!
Carey Mansion has been featured on "Ghost Hunters" due to the paranormal activity experienced here. In 2011, The Atlantic Paranormal Society claimed to have found ample evidence of paranormal activity on an episode.
The mansion's turreted profile became the icon for ‘Dark Shadows,’ the cult classic TV show which ran from 1966-1971. The show chronicled the Collins family of Collinsport, Maine. A number of supernatural events took place in the house on the show.
Thousands of fans flock to Newport annually to see Carey Mansion.
Speaking of dark shadows, there are often some that are seen after night falls. Could they be ghosts from one of the mansion's many incarnations, including an all-girls boarding school? It's truly one of the most creepy places in Rhode Island.
Here's a fun fact: Seaview Terrace is the fifth largest mansion in Newport, behind only The Breakers, Ochre Court, Belcourt Castle, and Rough Point.
Several statues seem to pray over the wandering lost souls.
This portrait of Barnabas looks on as spirits jiggle door handles and engage in other mischief.
Since purchasing the mansion, the Carey family has been renovating their private home while possibly chasing the ghosts away.
Even the tree out front looks rather spooky, hinting at what lies inside one of the most haunted houses in Rhode Island.
Carey Mansion, aka Seaview Terrace, is not only the largest residence in Rhode Island but also one of the most haunted places in the state. But since it is private property, please do not disturb or trespass. As you pass by on Ruggles Avenue and catch a glimpse, you have to wonder about the mysteries that lie inside. Although Seaview Terrace has its hauntings, it's still considered an architectural masterpiece and to many still, a hidden gem in Rhode Island.
