The Only Covered Bridge In Rhode Island Has Been Around Since 1986

Rhode Island's bridges are what connects the state, and you'll see them all over the place. That being said, by definition, the Ocean State actually only has one true covered bridge -- and that's pretty surprising, since historic covered bridges are scattered all over New England. But while the Swamp Meadow Bridge is the only of its kind, it certainly has staying power.

The Swamp Meadow Bridge crosses Hemlock Brook in the small town of Foster in Providence County.

And although the bridge has a historic look and feel, it's not that old -- and, in fact, this is the second bridge that was built at this site.

The idea for the bridge was developed in 1986. And by May of 1993, it was finished.

Unfortunately, the original bridge was destroyed by vandals that same year, but it was rebuilt in 1994.

While this bridge is very new by New England standards, it has a much older appearance -- and that's because it's a replica of an earlier model.

There was once a bridge here that looked exactly like this, which was built in the 19th century. In fact, one of the reasons this bridge was constructed was to celebrate Rhode Island's 350th birthday.

The bridge was built over an existing steel bridge using lumber that was donated by the Providence Water Supply.

It was a true community effort.

These days, while it does serve a practical purpose, the Swamp Meadow Bridge is mainly used for photo ops.

Not only is the bridge itself beautiful, but the area around it is stunning, offering amazing natural scenery in any season (but especially in the autumn).
