Learn How To Catch And Tag Monarch Butterflies At This Pennsylvania State Park
Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center in Nazareth, Pennsylvania offers a program to help conserve endangered monarch butterflies through catching and tagging.
Many of us spend as much time as we can outdoors, especially during the warmer months when we can sit back and enjoy the birds, the squirrels and chipmunks, and the butterflies. We may see fewer and fewer monarch butterflies when we’re outdoors, unfortunately, and that’s because they’re now considered endangered. Learn how to help toward the conservation of these majestic insects at this state park in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
The future of migrating monarch butterflies is hazy, earning the species a spot on the red list of endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
While the monarch butterfly does not currently have federally protected status, that is tentatively set to change in 2024.
In the meantime, Pennsylvanians can work toward the conservation of this now-endangered species by growing plants that attract monarch butterflies and by learning how to catch and tag them.
Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center in Nazareth hosts a free program, Monarch Madness, throughout September, including Sept. 9, 2023, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The two-hour program will teach you about monarch butterflies, including the ongoing efforts to help conserve them.
Part of that conservation process is catching and tagging monarch butterflies to keep track of their movement and study their habits.
As part of Monarch Madness, you’ll have the opportunity to work with Monarch Watch, a University of Kansas program that focuses on conservation and research. You’ll learn how to catch and tag butterflies and other ways you can help this now-endangered species.
