The Oregon Ghost Town That’s Perfect For An Autumn Day Trip

Shaniko, a well-preserved ghost town in Oregon, offers a fascinating glimpse into the state's pioneer and Gold Rush history, making it an ideal autumn day trip.

With its deep pioneer roots and history with the Gold Rush and Western expansion (and of course, the eponymous Oregon Trail), there are quite a few ghost towns hiding in Oregon. Shaniko is one of the most intriguing. Once known as the Wool Capital of the World, this town in north-central Oregon was established in 1901 and business boomed -- the town's manufacturers made a cool $3 million in 1903. But what goes up must inevitably come down, and Shaniko fell hard and fast. Today it's one of the state's most well-preserved and intriguing ghost towns. As we enter the season of delightfully frightening fun, the Shaniko ghost town in Northern Oregon is perfect for an autumn day trip.

Time can be a cruel, cruel thing. For proof of this, just visit Shaniko, Oregon.

These are the people who once called Shaniko home. They came with high hopes and dreams, riding a wave of glittering gold promise.

For a while, Shaniko fulfilled these promises -- albeit, not with gold or precious metals, but wool. In its heyday, Shaniko was the top wool producer in the Pacific Northwest region, and its population boomed. There were nearly 500 residents in 1910; but just a decade later, nearly all of these ambitious souls would be gone.

It's as if they up and vanished into thin air, and were never there at all. But why?

Shaniko's descent into desolation was the result of a one-two punch: first, the mayor was shot and killed during an outburst of violence in 1911; then, the Columbia Southern Railroad Line relocated, taking the town’s thriving economy with it.

Shaniko residents left an entire town in their wake, with automobiles, stores, and homes vacated seemingly overnight.

Today, Shaniko is a place full of old relics; a time capsule of a bygone era. Here you'll find the town's surprisingly well-preserved cornerstones: a hotel, jail, church, and schoolhouse.

Known as one of Oregon's best-preserved ghost towns, Shaniko is a must-visit day trip for anyone curious about this fascinating moment in American history.

But Shaniko's story is one with a happy ending: the town's remaining residents are a proud bunch, putting on several annual events, including a vintage music festival, a bluegrass jamboree, and historic Shaniko Days.
