This Iconic Holiday Event in Oregon is the One Thing You Must Do This Season

Christmas comes to life in dazzling color in the tiny town of Sumpter, Oregon.

Let's get one thing straight: Oregon knows how to do Christmas.

From the dazzling technicolor displays of Portland’s beloved ZooLights to renowned holiday traditions along the coast, our state overflows with festive cheer. So much so, that these celebrations often make national headlines, drawing wonder-eyed crowds from miles around. Yet, while much of the spotlight focuses on Oregon's Christmas festivities west of the Cascades, Eastern Oregon quietly offers its own must-visit holiday experience that’s just as magical — especially for those seeking charm, history, and a slower pace.

If you're from the western side of the state, you've probably never heard of the Sumpter Valley Railroad, but it's well worth a trip from any corner of the state. This scenic passenger train has been chugging through the area since 1890, and it's one of our favorite ways to enjoy a low-key family journey through the trees.

Come the holiday season, though, the Sumpter Valley Railroad's Christmas Train gets a holly jolly makeover and is one of the most iconic attractions in the area. Together, the Christmas Train and Sumpter Christmas Parade offer an unforgettable holiday experience filled with charm, history, and just the right amount of holiday magic!

Set against the snowy backdrop of the Elkhorn Mountains, this beloved holiday staple draws visitors from all around the PNW to Eastern Oregon for a Christmas event that’s equal parts nostalgic and spectacular. The narrow-gauge railway, originally built in the late 19th century to haul timber and gold, has been lovingly restored and preserved as a living piece of Baker County’s heritage. During the holiday season, the railroad transforms into a festive, twinkle-lit adventure, taking riders on a colorful, postcard-perfect journey through history and some of the state's most underrated landscapes.

Every day for one fantastically festive weekend, the Christmas Train departs from McEwen Depot, its vintage cars decked out in colorful lights and holiday garlands. As the train chugs along snow-draped tracks, passengers are treated to breathtaking, snow-dusted views of the Elkhorn Range and the Powder River Valley.

Even Santa himself makes an appearance both at the station and on the train, greeting kids and adults alike with cheer, while hot cocoa and festive treats keep everyone warm and merry.

Once the train pulls into the historic Sumpter Depot, if you time your ride just right, the festivities will continue in town too. Sumpter may be small but it’s big on holiday spirit!

The annual Christmas Parade is a beloved tradition, with decorated floats, local musicians, and even more Santa sightings. As the parade winds through town, spectators from all around the county line the streets, sipping hot chocolate and marveling at the creativity on display. It all culminates in a brilliant tree-lighting ceremony.

The whole weekend-long event feels like a Hallmark movie come to life. Snowy rooftops and old brick buildings give this semi-ghost town timeless appeal, and during Christmas, it’s all amplified by the warm glow of lights strung along Main Street. At the local Christmas Bazaar, shops and vendors offer handmade gifts, local crafts, and plenty of opportunities to snag a unique souvenir. Tickets for the train sell out fast, so grab yours as early as possible!

Baker County offers plenty to explore beyond the train and parade. Sumpter is uniquely surrounded by the remnants of its gold mining past, including the iconic Sumpter Valley Dredge, now a state heritage area. Visitors can take a quiet walk through the park and imagine the town’s bustling heyday when gold fever was at its peak.

Nearby, Baker City is another gem worth visiting as well, with its beautifully preserved downtown and the award-winning Geiser Grand Hotel. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cozy meal or unwind after a day of snowy adventures.

What sets the Sumpter Valley Railroad Christmas Train and Parade apart from other holiday events in Oregon is the sense of authenticity. The train ride, the parade, the most true-to-life Santa you've ever seen, and the welcoming atmosphere of the town all combine to create an experience that feels heartfelt and genuine — everything you could possibly hope for in a nationally-recognized Christmas celebration!

This season, pack your warmest winter gear, bring your camera, and prepare for a holiday outing that’s nothing short of magical. Whether you’re a history buff, a train enthusiast, or simply someone looking for a unique way to celebrate the season, the Sumpter Valley Railroad Christmas Train and Christmas Parade deliver an unforgettable experience that will leave you glowing with holiday cheer.
