As the oldest American settlement on the west coast, Astoria has a rich history spanning more than 200 years. From maritime warfare to battles between settlers and native tribes, this Oregon town has seen it all. Of course, a place with so much history is subject to lots of lore and legends, and Astoria is no exception. In fact, many consider it to be the most haunted town in Oregon. Read on to learn about the creepy history and hauntings around Astoria...
Located in Clatsop County along the Columbia River, Astoria was established in 1811 when the crew of the Tonquin staked the first U.S. claim to the west coast of the continent. This historic town went on to become the first permanent U.S. settlement west of the Rocky Mountains.
Few people know that Astoria has a brutal history of men being "shanghaied" in the early part of the century.
A man walking down the wrong street at night could wake up the next morning and find himself out at sea.
As if the shanghaiing system weren't creepy enough, Astoria is also home to a wide number of reportedly haunted places, including the Liberty Theater. Back in the day, Duke Ellington, Jack Benny, Guy Lombardo and supposedly even gangster Al Capone all hung out here.
Today, a ghost by the name of Paul is said to live here. Over the years, many members of cast and crew have spotted him around the theater and even witnessed objects gliding through the air.
Another building shrouded in darkness is the old firehouse. Originally built in 1856, this historic structure is said to be haunted by a sleepwalking fireman.
One of the creepiest remnants of the past lies just outside of town. Fort Stevens State Park is an abandoned military fort rumored to be haunted by the ghost of at least one soldier who wanders the grounds at night.
Built during the Civil War, Fort Stevens was a military installation that was in service until 1947. Visitors have reported witnessing many strange occurrences and hearing eerie voices.
