Quiet Hiking Trails

Crater Lake National Park is home to more than 90 miles of hiking trails, with options for every level of hiker. Some trails are extremely popular like the Cleetwood Cove Trail (which is closed from 2026 to 2028 for major repairs), Garfield Peak Trail, and the easy Sun Notch Trail. But then there are many others where you can more easily escape the crowds and find yourself alone with the smell of pine, birds singing in the trees, and awe-inspiring views around every turn. The Castle Crest Wildflower Garden Trail is particularly stunning in late summer and is often overlooked, or even the Union Peak Trail, which is the longest maintained trail in the park and also one of the most diverse.

Secret Overlooks

Rim Village is one of the most popular areas of this Oregon park and offers some of the most exquisite views. However, because this area is popular, many visitors don't bother stopping at other overlooks, particularly the more remote spots or overlooks where a hike is required. While you might not find yourself completely alone at these viewpoints, you likely won't be fighting a group of people to enjoy a postcard-worthy scene. The 33-mile Rim Drive that circles the lake is home to 30 overlooks alone, making it easy to find unique views of the lake, meadows, the caldera, and more.

Stargazing

While many visitors spend the day in this Oregon park, when night falls, they are on to their next adventure. Due to the park’s high elevation and the lack of light pollution, Crater Lake National Park is one of the best stargazing destinations in Oregon. While most overlooks throughout the park provide incredible starry sky views, even just the simple pullouts along Rim Drive are often the best places to enjoy breathtaking scenes. Night sky programs are also offered by rangers throughout the summer, and give you even more opportunities to catch the night's bright show.

Tips for Exploring Crater Lake National Park Beyond the Crowds

Late summer is typically the best time to visit Crater Lake. This national park is known for its heavy snowfall and snow can remain on the ground until the middle of summer. Typically, by June and July, most of the roads are open, trails are accessible, and most services are available. However, this also means you’ll be fighting the crowds. We recommend visiting in early fall, after many families have gone back to school and the weather is still comfortable.

Although if you truly want a quiet experience, plan a visit in the winter as the main roads are closed to vehicles, and you must explore via snowshoes, cross-country skiing, or on snowmobiles. Visit the National Park Service to learn more about the various things to do at Crater Lake National Park in any season.

Even in one of the most visited destinations in Oregon, you can still discover hidden gems and secret spots. These areas are where you'll find breathtaking views, a little solitude, and experiences you won't want to soon forget. They might just require a little extra effort to find—but the journey will be well worth it.
