4 Overhyped Oklahoma Places That Look Better Online Than in Real Life

The phrase "Instagram vs. reality" came about for a reason. It's no secret that social media distorts our worldview, and this holds true for travel as well. While the Sooner State is largely underrated, in my opinion, these overhyped destinations in Oklahoma appear more impressive online than in person.

1. Bath Lake (Medicine Park)

I want to preface this by saying that it isn't an attack on Medicine Park as a whole. The historic small town is every bit as charming as it's made out to be, but certain attractions, like Bath Lake, don't always live up to the hype. With waterfalls, fairytale-like suspension bridges, and lush greenery, this scenic swimming hole has been a popular summer destination for both locals and tourists since the 1920s. However, many photos are either filtered or taken at an angle that makes the water appear much clearer and bluer than it actually is. Also, it's often very crowded, especially on weekends, which is a far cry from the peaceful scene depicted online.

2. Turner Falls Park (Davis)

Turner Falls is undeniably impressive, especially for Oklahoma. Nestled in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains, this 77-foot natural wonder spills into a turquoise swimming hole perfect for cooling off on hot summer days. Between the pristine water and the jaw-dropping cascade, the park photographs beautifully, but pictures don't tell the whole story. Many visitors say it feels more like a man-made water park during peak season because of the crowds, and some people also think the entrance and parking fees are too high. If you choose to go, weekdays during late spring or early fall are the best time.

3. The Blue Whale of Catoosa, Catoosa

I suppose photo-ops are the whole point of roadside attractions, but even with that in mind, the Blue Whale of Catoosa is underwhelming. Sure, it's quirky and nostalgic: everything you'd expect from a Route 66 icon. However, this little slice of Americana often disappoints most visitors because it's much smaller in person than the photos suggest. The surrounding pond is murky, covered in algae, and filled with mosquitoes, and the overall vibe is run-down. It may be worth a quick photo stop if you're already in the area, but I wouldn't go so far as taking a detour to see it.

4. Natural Falls State Park, West Siloam Springs

My first thought when I saw a photo of Natural Falls State Park was that it looks like a lovely place for a swim. Much to my dismay, I later found out that swimming isn't allowed, and my research revealed that many people have experienced similar disappointment. The waterfall is gorgeous, however, and it's definitely worth seeing in person. Surrounded by lush greenery and rocky cliffs, the natural wonder appears to belong on a tropical island rather than in Oklahoma. Since you already know you can't swim, you'll have a great time enjoying the breathtaking view.
