There are so many cool abandoned places in Oklahoma to explore. From dilapidated amusement parks to old schools and deserted ghost towns, there's no telling what you'll find while exploring these spots. However, there are some places that can be dangerous, and we found Chilocco Indian School, an abandoned school in Oklahoma that was used as a biological weapons test site in 2018 that you'll want to stay far away from. Here's a look at all the details we know:
The testing site at the old Chilocco Indian School is located off US 77 and E0018 Road in Newkirk. Weapons testing occurred sometime in 2018.
The Department of Homeland Security posted a legal notice in the local newspaper, saying the department would release "non-hazardous, non-toxic chemicals and biological materials" at the school, so... heads up.
...you know, the usual stuff. Just another day in the Sooner State.
They said the data from the testing would help them assess the impact of biological weapons.
Many Newkirk residents were on edge about their homes, businesses, and schools being so close to the Chilocco Indian School.
No worries, though - as far as we can tell, things went off without a hitch, and the experiments are long over.
The mission of the experiment was because "they wanted to see what might happen if a terrorist were to release similar chemicals as a biological weapon, and if buildings would offer residents any kind of protection."
Hmmm...that sounds interesting (and completely freaky!).
They've assured the town that the chemicals they used are not considered hazardous by the Environmental Protection Agency when handled appropriately.

Is anyone else wondering what happens if they don't handle the chemicals appropriately? These days, the school is used as a training ground for federal police. Do not visit. It is not open to the public. This is one of those things you've got to admire from afar, unfortunately. Have you ever heard of the Chilocco Indian School in Oklahoma before? Let us know your thoughts on it in the comments.
Of the many abandoned schools in Oklahoma (more than 70 exist) this may be the creepiest of them all. If you would like to hit the road and visit an abandoned place where there are no hazardous chemicals, check out this cool, abandoned missile silo in Altus.
