Here in Ohio, we have many claims to fame, from being home to the country’s largest Oktoberfest to being the birthplace of aviation. Recently, we gained another line on our resume with the Toledo Glass City River Wall. The largest outdoor mural in the country, the Toledo Glass City River Wall is a beautiful public art installation consisting of 28 brilliantly painted ADM silos along the Maumee River. Offering a message of community and optimism as it catapults Ohio into the national spotlight — in a very big and meaningful way, it’s something we are truly proud of. Not only is it the largest mural in the United States, but it is also definitely one of the best murals in Ohio!
Art has long been hailed as a transformative medium; a vehicle for prompting discussion and affecting change. But can a mural really bring urban renewal through hope, positive messaging, education, and community outreach?
Absolutely it can. Especially here in Toledo, Ohio.
The Glass City River Wall was an ambitious project announced amid a global pandemic, as a way of bringing the community together and providing a message of inclusion, representation, and hope. Because what could be more hopeful than bright, beautiful sunflowers adorning a previously barren industrial stretch in Ohio?
A team of artists began painting 28 silos owned by the ADM grain facility on the east bank of the Maumee River in June 2021. With each silo standing 135 feet tall, the artwork covers an area measuring approximately 170,000 square feet or roughly three football fields.
In both form and content, the Glass City River Wall is a lesson in collaboration and community effort.
Designed by California artist Gabe Gault, its three towering portraits, which represent the Native American women and children who were the first farmers of the region, are modeled on living members from three different indigenous tribes: the Miami Tribe, the Shawnee Tribe, and the Lakota Tribe.
The sunflowers, meanwhile, represent the wild sunflower or Sun Choke, one of the key crops for indigenous people of the region.
With its completion, not only is the Glass City River Wall the largest in Toledo, Ohio, and the entire country, it's also a proud symbol of the strength and resiliency of Ohioans - a symbol of community pride and spirit.
Toledo - and, more broadly, Ohio - doesn't get enough credit. But it's a beautiful place with hard-working people, something that's captured by this stunning, record-setting artwork.
The Glass City River Wall is a true Ohio treasure, and it's transformed the Toledo waterfront into a dynamic and beautiful work of art!
