This North Dakota Sanatorium Is Among The Most Haunted Places In The Nation

San Haven Sanatorium in North Dakota is considered one of the most haunted places in the state and the country.

There's no doubt about it: North Dakota can be a pretty spooky place. To celebrate this high strangeness that's uniquely our own, let's take a look at one of the spookiest places in North Dakota, if not the entire country. This terrifying place will send a shiver down your spine just by its appearance alone. This is considered the most haunted spot in the entire state, and you'll want to stay far, far away from it...unless you're like us, in which case, you're going to want to check it out if you ever get the chance.

North Dakota's most notorious haunted spot has been investigated by and featured on popular shows like Ghost Adventures, and for good reason. It's considered one of the most haunted spots not just in the state, but the entire country.

This is the San Haven Sanatorium, once also known as the State Sanatorium. It is located far north near Dunseith, ND and has long since been abandoned and continues to get further dilapidated over the years.

It was built in 1909 for tuberculosis patients and as that epidemic died out it was used as a place to house patients from the former North Dakota Institution for the Feeble Minded. It saw hundreds of patients over the years of its operation until it was shuttered due to health concerns over those who were being kept there, which has indicated a fairly dark, disturbing history of the place.

San Haven Sanatorium has been strongly considered haunted by many people. Those that visit it have reported tons of unusual activity, most believed to be paranormal, such as apparitions and noises like baby cries. Please keep in mind that this is private property and anyone who visits it is trespassing, so do not go yourself.

The terrifying images from inside the buildings are chilling to say the least, especially when you hear of all the accounts of scary encounters here. People especially mention the 5th floor of the building being extra eerie. There are multiple urban legends and myths surrounding this place, especially concerning a rumor of one trespassing explorer falling down an elevator shaft an dying.

The property continues to fall into disrepair as time goes on, but spirits of those that suffered from tuberculosis or misunderstood mental illnesses that were residents may still linger here. It's no surprise that this place has built up such a reputation as being haunted, because it's positively spooky.

As mentioned before, the San Haven Sanatorium is on private property, and due to the neglected nature of the buildings, it's highly dangerous to visit. We do not recommend exploring it yourself. However, one cool way to experience it without ever stepping foot in it is this eerie yet awesome drone footage taken on the grounds. Creepy stuff - we love it!
