Did you know that there is a public technology sculpture coming to New York called the Portal that acts as virtual—and visual—link between two places in time? Well, there is, and it’s going to make New York City just a little more global. The Portal provides a real-time, visual live stream that connects cities, and a forthcoming sculpture in New York City’s Flatiron District will bring together Manhattan with Dublin, Ireland! This portal in the Flatiron District of New York is not to be missed. To learn more, keep reading, below.
No, this is not science fiction. This is the Portal!
The Portal in New York City is set to be installed on the Flatiron South Public Plaza at Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street—right by the Flatiron Building. It's a high-traffic area that is a perfect location for the sculpture.
On the other side of the pond, the Portal is going to be erected next to O’Connell Street, which is considered to be Dublin’s main street. Included in the view will be the city’s GPO building and the Spire.
The first project created by Portal dates back to 2021, when Lithuania and Poland were connected. It’s a project that has a massive reach—hundreds of millions of people, both in person and on the internet.
New Yorkers are excited. “This real-time connection between two iconic public spaces in global cities on either side of the Atlantic will bring people together, both physically and digitally,” said James Mettham, President of the Flatiron NoMad Partnership.
The portal will be on view from spring 2024 until fall 2024. Do not miss it! If for whatever reason, New York City isn't in the cards, the project can be viewed online.
When the Portal opens in New York, visitors should run, not walk to check it out. Trust us on this one! While in Manhattan, why not also dine at this famous spot where many celebrities have hung out? And for those looking for a place to stay in the city, we recommend Tempo By Hilton New York Times Square.
