After Christmas, it can feel like there aren't too many winter festivals in New York remaining. After all, the holidays are the big celebration of the season, and once the new year hits, a lot of celebratory activity tends to die down. One newer winter festival that doesn't focus on the holidays is the American Lantern Festival at Castel Grisch Winery in Watkins Glen. This colorful festival allows you to walk or drive through dozens of beautifully hand-crafted lantern creatures. The magnificent, larger-than-life sculptures are made in the centuries-old Chinese tradition that dates all the way back to the Han Dynasty. With modern LED lighting, these works of art are truly spectacular. This is one family-friendly winter festival in New York that you won't want to miss!

The festival features sculptures made from steel, silk, and LED lights. It's the first year the festival has been in New York, and there are more than 200 lantern creatures here.

The subjects are animals set up in lifelike scenes that are just as delightful for adults as they are for kids.

You may think Christmas is your last opportunity to see beautiful light displays in New York, but these displays are as magnificent as any set up in December.

The owner of Castel Grisch Winery has family from China and was thrilled to host the festival.

He's hoping to incorporate lantern sculptures into the winery's year-round decor, perhaps even changing with seasonal themes.

After the show, make sure to stop inside the winery for some special parfaits. There are wine parfaits for adults and gummy parfait options for kids.

Some of the sculptures are very small, with others towering from larger-than-life heights. They were constructed in China and then shipped here, where they were set up over the course of several months.

The festival was originally slated to end in January, but due to its popularity, it will now run through mid-February.
