There's something to be said for a life of quiet contemplation, hard work, and prayer, but the life of a monk isn't for everyone. Most of us will never know the simple existence that comes from living at a monastery, but we can visit these beautiful places to soak in a little bit of the spirituality and peace found here. Take a look at this beautiful monastery in Silver City:
Nestled in the Rocky Mountains with stunning views of the valley below, Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery was founded in 1991, and built over the following few years. It's an incredible place to visit.
Address: 142 Joseph Blane Road, Silver City, NM, 88061
The young group of men who live, work, and pray here are Benedictine monks who have left behind secular lives for lives of contemplation, work, and prayer. The stunning architecture of the monastery, set against the rugged beauty of the Rockies, creates the perfect setting.
Seven times a day, and once in the middle of the night, the bells ring out to call the monks to prayer.
The Opus Dei, the Work of God is the prayer that separates each part of the monks' day. In between these prayers, the monks work at various tasks, including woodworking, gardening, landscaping, construction, farming, cheese-making, and more.
The Divine Office is chanted in Gregorian daily. Visitors may also attend Low Mass Monday through Saturday at 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. On Sundays, high mass is offered at 9:30 a.m., with confession beforehand.
The public is welcome to visit the monastery from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Make an appointment with the guestmaster for a tour by sending an email to [email protected].
During your visit, you can stroll the beautiful grounds of the monastery, and spend time quietly enjoying this beautiful, spiritual place.
You'll also want to pop into the gift shop during your visit. It's open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and offers sacramentals, books, stationary, fountain pens, and gifts.
Our Lady of Guadalupe currently welcomes day visitors only, as its overnight accommodations are currently under construction. Watch for updates so you can stay at the newly-renovated St. Margaret's Guesthouse soon.
