There’s No Community In New Jersey More Enchanting And Historic Than East Jersey Old Town Village

New Jersey's colonial roots run deep, and you can usually find some historic buildings in just about any town you visit. However, I was pleased to discover you can find a whole historic village in New Jersey - while barely leaving the grounds of Rutgers University. The town of Piscataway is home to the sleek, modern Busch Campus, which is Rutgers' science hub. But only minutes away, you'll find East Jersey Old Town Village - a unique open-air museum located in Johnson Park. A large part of the park is devoted to a collection of reconstructed buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th century, when the area was heavily populated by farmers and merchants. Many of the buildings have been relocated from around the Middlesex County area, and a talented team of recreators is on hand to bring the community to life.

Busch Campus is a sleek, modern place with towering buildings, but you're only feet away from history.

Step into Johnson Park, look for the telltale sign, and prepare to step into a historic village like no other.

Many famous buildings have been relocated here, including the Indian Queen Tavern and the New Brunswick barracks.

One of the most famous buildings on the grounds is the Smalleytown Schoolhouse, dating back to 1809.

But the amazing part of this village is that you don't just look at the outside - you can head inside too!

This village is an amazing opportunity to get a look at what a traditional one-room schoolhouse was like.

Or a historic tavern! It looks good enough that I definitely wish they were still serving up 18th-century era pub grub!

A team of dedicated re-enactors work at the site, and host frequent events giving you a closer look at what this area was like during the American Revolution - complete with mock battles!
