The Winter Village In New Hampshire That Will Enchant You Beyond Words
Shrine of Our Lady-La Salette in Enfield, New Hampshire, features a spectacular light display every December, making it a beloved holiday tradition.
Every day we get a little bit closer to Christmas. While we're certainly not trying to rush things, we can't help but continue to get excited as the lights go up, the snow falls and fireplaces all over New Hampshire begin burning warmth and coziness for all to enjoy. As you make your plans for celebrating this month, make sure you include a visit to this wonderful little village. They've got a beautiful display and it's been in operation for more than 50 years!
During the day the Shrine of Our Lady-La Salette in Enfield looks fairly calm.
But, from late November to the end of December things at this village light up in a spectacular fashion.
Since 1954, the 20-acre hillside has been bursting with tens of thousands of incredible lights throughout the month of December.
The show is put on by the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette, which is a Catholic religious order. But, originally the village was a Shaker community dating back to 1782.
The community had up to 350 members when it was thriving and the site includes the large Great Stone Dwelling House, which was built here in 1837. It continues to be the largest Shaker structure ever built!
While the history is interesting, we're dazzled by this light show that's been a family tradition for many New Hampshirites since childhood.
While the lights here might not be the brightest in New England, this Granite State tradition is an important part of the season that we love to see year after year.
Shrine of Our Lady-La Salette is located at 410 NH-4A, Enfield, New Hampshire. Learn more about the community and the light show on their website. The lights are illuminated from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. every night through December 31st, 2018. You can find refreshments in the cafe until 8:30 p.m.
