Ely was originally a Pony Express and Central Overland Route stagecoach station. With the discovery of copper in 1906, Ely's mining boom proved pivotal for the town's development as the railroad passed through. While remnants of the first transcontinental railroad have been removed, the railroad to Ely has been preserved by the Nevada Northern Railway as a heritage railway. This illustrious history is evident in the Railway and East Ely Railroad Depot Museum—a must-see nostalgic Nevada railway museum for train enthusiasts. Well, hello there, sir.

While the Nevada Northern Railway's original purpose was hauling copper ore, it did transport other cargo and even operated a passenger train daily.

In 1990, Nevada State Museum purchased the original depot and the freight barn and restored them both to their 1900s-era glory.

In fact, not only is the East Ely Train Depot the oldest preserved building in White Pine County, it is also the most well-preserved.
