It's getting to be the fun, spooky time of year when we go looking for the scary and the weird. We love to be frightened, and Nebraska doesn't disappoint when it comes to haunted hotspots. If you're seeking a good scare this Halloween season, these spots (in no particular order) might be the best places to chase a ghost in Nebraska.
1. Hummel Park, Omaha
There are many, many tales of hauntings and other spooky events taking place in this beautiful park in North Omaha. Some events, like a body being discovered and a murder taking place, can be verified. Others are nothing but legends passed around for years.Read more about Hummel Park here.
2. Barnard Park, Fremont
The fun, family-friendly park Fremonters know and love today has a rather fascinating past. It sits on what was once the site of the city cemetery, and many of the city's founders were buried there. When the population began to outgrow Fremont's original cemetery, the remains interred there were exhumed and moved to a new location. Legend has it that some of the bodies were left behind, and today you can see their ghosts roaming the park after dark.Read more about this reportedly haunted park here.
3. Warbonnet Battlefield Monument, near Harrison
The site of this 1876 battle commemorates the one and only casualty to occur there that day. However, the ghosts that frequent this site don't belong to that one slain warrior. Rather, the creepy green mist and sounds of phantom footsteps that many experience here are said to be other Native Americans. Read more about this spooky historical site here.
4. Argo Hotel, Crofton
The historic Argo Hotel dates back almost to the very beginning of the town of Crofton itself. It is said to be home to a number of spirits, possibly because the hotel was used as a medical clinic for a number of years.Read more about this historic haunted hotel here.
5. Smitty's Curve, near Geneva
This haunted road just outside of Geneva, Nebraska is allegedly home to at least two ghosts: the eponymous Smitty and an unnamed young boy who hung himself nearby. Many people who have driven the road at night have reported some very odd experiences. Read more about those hauntings and the stories behind them here.
6. Museum of Shadows, Plattsmouth
This creepy small-town museum is one of the most haunted attractions in the country. Inside you'll find items said to be cursed or possessed, including an extra-creepy doll which some people say moves on its own. The museum isn't just scary; it's informative as well. 7. Hotel Café and Saloon, Scribner
Although this 1901 building was originally a hotel, it now operates as a restaurant. Its past is full of several tales of onsite deaths, and those spirits may still roam the structure today. A professional ghost-hunting team even confirmed that the restaurant is haunted, though they determined the ghosts are harmless.Read more of the story here.
8. Wheat Growers Hotel, Kimball
There was only one reported death at this hotel which was built in 1918, but it's a horrifying story. According to the legend, a young lady was trapped in a speakeasy tunnel beneath the hotel and died a slow, agonizing death of thirst over the course of several days. 9. Prospect Hill Cemetery, Omaha
This cemetery holds some of the founding residents of Omaha - people whose names now grace buildings and streets. It may also be home to restless spirits, if visitors' reports can be believed. Read more about this fascinating historic cemetery here.
10. Speakeasy Restaurant, near Holdrege
The Speakeasy is a delightful gourmet restaurant that's kind of in the middle of nowhere. It's worth the drive just to eat there, but hearing the tale of Faceless Fred, the resident ghost, is an added bonus. According to the story, a local man named Fred invoked his wife's ire by sleeping with another woman. His wife exacted her revenge by killing Fred, cutting off his face, and dumping his body in a well near what is now the restaurant. Patrons and employees have reported seeing and hearing a ghostly presence. 11. Village of Table Rock (multiple locations), Pawnee County
