Montana’s Most Spectacular July 4th Fireworks Displays to Plan Around

As the seasons change in Montana, it can feel like life goes by so quickly. One moment we're hiking through remnants of ice and snow in the mountains, the next we're lazing in the grass under the summer sun. And then, before we know it, it's fall. As a diehard lover of all things summer, I try to hold onto every moment of warmer temps and outside fun. That's why I'm always holding my breath for July 4th celebrations. Because, while summer officially begins in June, it always feels so much more real with an annual fireworks display. Every year, I start planning where to watch fireworks near me, and today, I'm sharing what I've found. Here are some of the best fireworks displays in Montana.

1. Independence Day Fireworks, Bozeman

This free show hosted by Bozeman Fire takes place at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds and is certain to be one of the best in the state. By hosting this beloved event at the fairgrounds, guests have more parking options and an easier way to get in and leave after the show. The locally funded event typically starts at 10 p.m. and runs for about 25 minutes. Bring your lawn chairs and pull up a spot on the open fields for a spectacular display.

2. July 4th Big Butte Fireworks Display, Butte

Independence Day celebrations in Butte date back to 1876, which means the town must know how to throw a party! The fireworks display takes place annually on July 3rd, followed by a parade through town on the 4th. The fireworks launch near the "Big M" above Montana Tech, and it's one of the best displays in the whole state! 3. People's Park & Recreation Fireworks, Great Falls

The town of Great Falls puts on a fantastic fireworks display for Independence Day each year. It was once put on by the city, but is now funded by the People's Parks and Recreation Foundation. The display can be seen from several spots, including Elks Riverside Park, Eagle Falls Golf Course, or Centene Stadium, and each destination offers a great view of West Bank Park. For double the fun, you can also see a fireworks display after the Great Falls Voyagers game.

4. Whitefish City Beach Fireworks, Whitefish

One of the best celebrations in the state takes place in Whitefish. Come hungry because the event includes lots of local food vendors, including shaved ice, mini doughnuts, BBQ, and corn dogs. Plan on arriving in the early evening to grab some food and find a spot before the fireworks begin. You'll enjoy a DJ, an Air Force flyover, and the grand finale of the night: a brilliant fireworks display.

Note that the main City Beach parking lot will be closed, and the Whitefish Lake State Park boat launch closes early, so be sure to make alternate arrangements. You could take a shuttle from the O'Shaughnessy Center to the beach.

5. Prickly Pear Community Fireworks Celebration, Helena

This East Helena celebration has taken place annually since 1957, thanks to the generous donations of local community members and businesses. Town Pump matches each annual donation to help put on this delightful Independence Day celebration for residents. Make donations by stopping at Shellie's Country Cafe or visiting the Prickly Pear Community Fireworks Celebration website. The display takes place near the American Chemet warehouse in East Helena.

6. Polson's Fireworks Show and Parade, Polson

Polson prides itself on being one of the state's most beloved spots to celebrate Independence Day. Another community donation-driven celebration, this event truly shines. The fun begins at Riverside Park on July 3rd at dusk. Find your spot and then wait for the impressive display to begin. Head home for a good night's sleep before coming back for the Red, White, and BBQ 4th of July Parade down Main Street. You can donate to the event at the Polson Chamber of Commerce website.

Remember that fire safety is crucial during this time of year. Using your own fireworks on public lands is illegal.
