Get Lost In American History At Montana’s Quirkiest Museum

Polson is a small town of about 4,800 people, conveniently located next to the magnificent Flathead Lake. But this quiet little city shouldn't be overlooked -- in addition to having some of Flathead County's tastiest restaurants, it's home to Montana's quirkiest museum. If you've ever been to The Miracle of America Museum, you already know it's one-of-a-kind.

While the Museum of the Rockies holds the title for Montana's largest museum, this one is certainly a top contender.

The set-up is entirely unique, and it looks more like a compound than a single building.

The museum was founded in 1981 by Gil and Joanne Mangels, who had the goal of preserving American history.

And they've certainly managed to do that.

The collection has grown exponentially over the last 40 years, attracting as many as 18,000 visitors annually from all over the country.

If you're a history buff, you'll recognize a lot of the displays -- and if you're not, you just might become one when you're here.

One of the perks of this museum is that a lot of its treasures are outside.

Summer days in Polson are amazing, so this is a definite bonus.

Here, you can instantly go back in time to several different eras.

This display represents Americana. You'll also find Transportation, Agriculture, Militaria, and more.

The current collection includes thousands of artifacts scattered throughout dozens of buildings, and it grows larger every year.

The best part is that the team gives back. The museum is able to sponsor several educational tours for elementary and secondary schools throughout Montana each year.

No visit to Flathead Lake is complete without paying a trip to this museum.
