This Iconic Holiday Event in Montana Is the One Thing You Must Do This Season
Holiday flair shows up in larger-than-life style at this beloved Christmas event in Belgrade.
There's something truly enchanting about celebrating Christmas in Montana. The towering pine trees flocked with snow, the mountains, our trademark star-filled skies — it all sets the perfect stage for some dazzling holiday magic that feels straight out of a postcard. Amidst this gorgeous winter wonderland, the town of Belgrade, Montana, hosts a fantastic event that captures the essence of the season: the Belgrade Christmas Convoy!
The Belgrade Christmas Convoy started back in 2019, thanks to the creative minds at the Belgrade Community Coalition (BCC). The idea was simple yet magical: deck out big rigs with holiday lights and parade them through town.
While it started out humbly with only a few dozen trucks, the event has rapidly become a hallmark of the holiday season in Southwest Montana, even earning national recognition and the creation of the Montana Convoy Association. Fast forward to today, and the convoy has grown to include more than 100 industrial rigs, ranging from semis and dump trucks to logging trucks and concrete mixers, each effectively bedazzled from hood to taillight with thousands of twinkling lights.
Literally.
THOUSANDS OF LIGHTS.
Each 72-foot truck takes up to 20 hours to decorate with holiday lights, making this a true labor of love for the participants.
And the joyful expressions on the locals' faces make the effort worth it!
The holly jolly convoy is seriously awe-inspiring, transforming these massive commercial vehicles into larger-than-life rolling Christmas displays, illuminating the crisp Montana night with thousands of multi-colored lights, from the simple to over-the-top themes. The seven-mile route is carefully planned to ensure the trucks have enough space to maneuver, and it's a jaw-dropping sight as they rumble through town one after another!
Although this beloved local event is definitely one of the coolest Christmas light displays/holiday events in Montana, the convoy isn't just about the trucks. It's also a full-blown holiday celebration.
The event kicks off with the Truck Village, hosted at the Gallatin Speedway, where families can get an up-close look at these vehicles on the Friday night before the parade. Visitors stroll amidst the trucks, marvel at the elaborate decorations, feast on food truck fare, and chat with the drivers about their festive creations. The convoy itself follows on Saturday evening, bringing the holiday spirit directly to neighborhoods as thousands of residents line the streets to watch the spectacle roll by.
Why Belgrade, through?
Belgrade, located just 10 miles northwest of Bozeman, is nestled in the heart of Gallatin Valley. Known for its strong community ties and picturesque setting near the Bridger Mountains, the town exudes an inviting blend of rural charm and modern convenience. The town is home to around 12,000 residents, making it pretty big by Montana standards. Yet, it's estimated that up to 10,000 visitors will be downtown to enjoy this annual Christmas spectacle.
When nearly the entire town population shows up for something, you know it's good. We can safely say that Belgrade certainly punches above its weight in holiday spirit!
The Christmas Convoy reflects Belgrade’s tight-knit community ethos, with local businesses, schools, and residents rallying together to celebrate. The convoy even supports local causes, raising funds for scholarships and community projects through the Montana Convoy Foundation, ensuring that the event gives back as much as it delights.
But wait ... there's more! The holiday magic continues even after the Christmas Convoy!
In the weeks leading up to and following the Convoy, Belgrade, Montana ramps up the festivities even more. More than 100 semi trucks? Yes! The whole town transforms into a dazzling winter wonderland at Belgrade's annual Festival of Lights, which kicks off Thanksgiving weekend and includes a mesmerizing walk-through Holiday Light Park at Senior Center Park, a special Memorial Night in honor of local veterans, and even live Christmas music.
Next, keep the Christmas cheer flowing in the daytime with the "Jingle Jog" fun run, a community ugly outfit contest, holiday market, downtown stroll, and so much more! (And before you ask, of course there will be prizes!)
Belgrade isn't the only small town in Montana with Hallmark-worthy delights, but Belgrade is definitely home to one of the most beloved holiday events of the season. Where else can you see industrial vehicles transformed into glowing works of art, all while soaking up the cheerful vibes of a community celebrating together all season long?
For even more holiday cheer, combine this one-of-a-kind festival with the region’s many other winter activities — like skiing at nearby Bridger Bowl or enjoying Bozeman's own downtown winter stroll — and your trip becomes a perfect mix of Christmas nostalgia and winter adventure.
Belgrade's epic Christmas Convoy takes place every year in early December, although dates vary from year to year, overlapping with the larger Festival of Lights. Whether you choose to make a day trip to the area or extend your stay into a true winter vacay, be sure to check out the official route beforehand for parking details and road closures and to scope out your perfect viewing spot. Of course, if you happen to live right on the route, enjoy the sights from the comfort of your living room!
Plan ahead and add the Belgrade Christmas Convoy to your other holiday road trip plans — it's an event to remember! From its welcoming residents to its snowy landscapes, this small Montana town proves that sometimes the most memorable Christmas celebrations happen in the most unexpected places.
