Old Lorimier Cemetery Is One Of Missouri’s Spookiest Cemeteries

Missouri lays claim to a long list of tales of the paranormal and real haunted spots. If you believe in or are intrigued by the paranormal, you’ve probably gone ghost hunting at least once in the state. If you’re a skeptic, you’re certainly not alone. A trip to this haunted cemetery in Missouri, however, might make you think twice about whether ghosts really do exist.

Old Lorimier Cemetery in Cape Girardeau boasts a long, storied history. The old cemetery first opened in the early 1800s, eventually becoming the final resting spot for more than 6,000 souls.

In its early days, where an individual was buried in the cemetery depended on whether they were Catholic or Protestant and on their race.

All records for the cemetery went up in flames during a fire at the Common Pleas Courthouse, so no one knows just how many people are or everyone who is buried on the hallowed grounds.

Legend, however, states that more than 1,000 Civil War soldiers were buried in a mass grave at Old Lorimier Cemetery, killed by the spread of small pox.

The cemetery, in fact, has several mass graves, including the victims of numerous steamboat accidents.

Stroll through the cemetery, and you’ll notice that the majority of the graves are unmarked, the identities of the residents lost to time and fire.
