In its previous life, the lead mine was owned by St. Joe Minerals Corporation, which produced massive amounts of lead.

At one time, in fact, Missouri produced the most lead - approximately 80 percent - in the United States.

Today, the old lead mine is known as the Missouri Mines State Historic Site and, with its indoor and outdoor exhibits, it's a popular destination for visitors.

You can explore the museum at your own pace. If you'd prefer, though, you can request a tour from a docent, if available.

Stroll through the museum, and you'll find a collection of old mining equipment. The museum also features educational placards, so you can get historical context on what you're seeing.
