Next time you're near Ash Grove, make a detour to the Nathan and Olive Boone Homestead State Historic Site.

Dating back to the 1830s, the homestead was once the home of pioneers Nathan and Olive Boone; Nathan was the youngest son of American icon, Daniel Boone.

Even though they were born in different states - Nathan in Kentucky and Olive in West Virginia - the two met and married in 1799. Together, they moved to St. Charles County.

The two raised 14 children during their 57-year marriage.

During his lifetime, Nathan opened a salt-making business with his brother, laid out Missouri's first roads, and served in the War of 1812.

The couple moved to the homestead in Ash Grove in the 1830s, remaining there until their deaths more than two decades later. Both are buried on the homestead.
