Last year, the website Traveler compiled a list of the 50 best places to visit in the US. The list included one can’t-miss attraction from every state. For Mississippi, that can’t-miss attraction is the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. As the name implies, the museum focuses on one of the most trying times in history, the Civil Rights Movement – but that’s not all. The museum boasts an array of other exhibits, too. Take a look:
Located in Jackson, the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum has been dubbed the best thing to do in Mississippi by Traveler. A feat that’s even more impressive when you consider that the museum opened just a little two years ago in December 2017.
And it’s not the first time the museum’s been recognized – in 2018, it was named Attraction of the Year by Visit Jackson.
Completely worthy of its accolades, the museum features an array of incredible interactive exhibits.
The perfect place to learn all about the Magnolia State, the museum’s exhibits cover Mississippi history from pre-historic times all the way to the modern age.
Of course, the primary focus of the museum is the Civil Rights Movement.
Eight interactive galleries shed light on the heroic struggle for freedom that spanned more than two decades in Mississippi.
The stories of iconic civil rights leaders and activists who forever changed the nation come to life at the museum, resulting in a history lesson like no other
A great day trip destination for all ages, admission is just $10 for adults, $6 for kids ages 4 – 18, $8 for seniors ages 60+ and military personnel, and free for kids ages 3 and under.
Want to save your money? Consider visiting the museum on the 3rd Saturday of the month when admission is FREE.
As the first state-sponsored civil rights museum in the entire nation, the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum is a one-of-a-kind attraction that shouldn’t be passed up.
The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum is open Tuesday – Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.. It's also open on Sundays from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. For more information, call (601) 576-6800. You can also visit the museum's website or Facebook page.
