The Monmouth Plantation Hotel was originally built in 1818 as a stately mansion by General John A. Quitman, an early Mississippi statesman and a national hero of the Mexican-American War.
The grand estate was named after General Quitman's hometown of Monmouth, New Jersey, and served as his family residence until he died in 1858.
Over the years, the Monmouth Plantation has seen many changes in ownership, serving various purposes from private residences to a hospital during the Civil War.
