Visiting This Haunted Mississippi Cemetery Will Give You Goosebumps

The saying love knows no bounds has never been more true than in the case of Helen Johnstone and Henry Grey Vick. Full of love, tragedy, heartbreak and the supernatural, the story surrounding the two is quite interesting and continues to live on at a small cemetery behind the Chapel of the Cross, a church in Madison, Mississippi.

The Chapel of the Cross was completed in 1855 and was originally part of John T. Johnstone’s plantation, Annadale. A prime example of Gothic Revival architecture, the church features a bell tower, tall narrow windows and arched entrances.

Today, the Chapel of the Cross is listed on the National Register of Historic places, and serves as fully-functioning church with an active congregation.

Located directly behind the church is a historic cemetery, which has been known to have a supernatural visitor from time to time. Just beyond the wrought iron enclosure lies the grave of Henry Vick. According to reports, Vick was killed just four days before he was set to marry Mr. Johnstone’s daughter, Helen.

Losing the love of her life, Helen was heartbroken, so much so, the she reportedly wore her wedding dress to Henry’s funeral. With their path liit by torchbearers, Helen and her mourning family made their way to the cemetery.

As the casket was lowered into the ground, the clock struck midnight. The date was May 21, 1859 - Helen and Henry’s wedding date.

There have been numerous reports that Helen’s ghost, still in her wedding dress, visits Henry’s grave quite frequently – often times sitting in the bench shown in the background of this photo.
