Michiganders have had had a centuries-long love affair with architecture. So it should come as no surprise that the castle style of building is heavily engrained in Michigan's culture. We've got urban castles, university palaces and of course the opulent compounds of barons of various enterprises who made their marks in history and entrepreneurship. Here, we share with you a sampling of glorious castles of Michigan, tucked right your radar.
12) Henderson Castle, Kalamazoo
Located in downtown Kalamazoo, this privately-owned home was built in 1895. It's now open to the public.
11) Old Main, Wayne State University, Detroit
Ground broke on Old Main in 1894 and took three years to complete. First built as Central High School, this castle was made with brick and limestone.
10) Cook Law Quadrangle, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Comprised of four buildings, construction on U of M's Law Quad started in 1924 and ended in 1933. The project was funded by alumnus William W. Cook and the structure bares his name.
9) Beaumont Tower, Michigan State University, East Lansing
MSU's iconic Beaumont Tower, completed in 1928, was designed by the architectural firm of Donaldson and Meier.
8) Eighth Precinct Police Station, Detroit
This historic Detroit police station was designed by Louis Kamper and completed in 1901.
7) Upper Peninsula Brewing Company, Marquette
Now an office building, this is the last remaining structure of a sprawling complex that housed the former brewing company.
6) Castle Farms, Charlevoix
Constructed in 1918 by then Sears Roebuck and Company VP Albert Loeb, this estate is now one of the largest special events properties in Michigan and a favorite spot for wedding photography.
5) Newberry Hall, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Another Ann Arbor site, this castle was designed by Spier & Rohns of Detroit and was completed in 1891.
4) Grand Army of the Republic Building, Detroit
Built in 1942, this Detroit landmark was originally used for GAR members, who consisted of Civil War veterans. Now, it's been restored and houses media company Mindfield and the swanky Republic restaurant.
3) Hoyt Public Library, Saginaw
Built in 1887, this downtown Saginaw site houses a plethora of historical Michigan records.
2) Curwood Castle, Owosso
Used as the writing studio of James Oliver Curwood, this restored castle is now a museum.
1) Castle Rock, St Ignace
Not a man-made palace, but rather a natural limestone formation, this landmark is a UP tourist attraction.
