So many amazing secret gems and underrated attractions are hidden throughout the big cities and quaint towns of Massachusetts. While we at Only In Your State do our best to visit and research these spots firsthand, we also rely on you, our readers, for personal feedback. Occasionally we even look to other platforms for additional suggestions. This month Only In Massachusetts decided to see what attractions local Redditors feel are the best underrated tourist spots in Massachusetts. Read on and see if you agree with their recommendations.
1. Minuteman National Park, Lincoln/Concord
Redditors rate this national park as one of the best-hidden gems in the state, and I have to agree. Whether you visit to learn about the historical events that led up to the Revolutionary War or just come here to take a scenic walk through the lovely grounds, the Minuteman National Park is an off-the-beaten-path destination that all locals and tourists should visit at least once.
2. The Montague Bookmill, Montague
The Montague Bookmill, which is located in a historic gristmill, is the perfect local spot to spend a relaxing afternoon. Step inside, and you will find thousands of secondhand books of various genres. The bookstore also has its own in-store cafe, The Lady Killigrew. Redditors rave about the eatery's chicken curry sandwich.
3. Quabbin Reservoir, Belchertown
I’ve never visited the Quabbin Reservoir, but after reading the Reddit reviews, I think I need to make time. The beautiful reservoir was created decades ago by flooding several local towns. Remnants of these communities remain underwater to this day. Not only is the Quabbin a fascinating place to visit, but it is also a scenic area for a drive or a hike.
4. DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln
The DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum is a hidden gem I discovered just a few years ago. I’m not sure why this Lincoln outdoor sculpture park isn’t more well-known, but it is a fabulous place to visit year-round. The 30-acre park contains 60 statues, which can be viewed at your leisure. It is also an excellent spot to bring a picnic lunch.
5. Dogtown, Gloucester
Gloucester, Massachusetts, is a coastal city chock full of unusual attractions like the Hammond Castle and Stage Fort Park. But did you know that an eerie ghost town is hidden within the woods of this North Shore community? To visit the fascinating ruins of the former Dogtown settlement, download the AllTrails+ app and set out on the scenic Babson Reservoir Dogtown Loop Trail.
6. Battleship Cove, Fall River
Battleship Cove is another Massachusetts attraction that is highly ranked by Redditors. This Fall River maritime museum features the world's most extensive collection of World War Two vessels, several of which have been declared National Historic Landmark US Naval ships.
