Massachusetts is filled with crumbling old structures and historic landmarks, but few are as picturesque as this lovely old church on the water. Old Stone Church is located in West Boylston and has a history as unique as its architecture. Old Stone Church is a beautiful spot in West Boylston. We happen to think that it’s one of the most scenic places in the state.

Located on the edge of the Wachusett Reservoir, the church was built in the 1890s to replace a Baptist church that was destroyed by fire.

Unfortunately, the new church only enjoyed about 10 years of service before being abandoned due to the decision to flood the surrounding town to create the reservoir.

Today, the church is still standing and impeccably maintained, though its interior is empty and unfinished. The public is welcome to visit the church any day of the year between sunrise and sunset.

After you’ve peeked inside, head down to the water’s edge to enjoy the cool breeze off the reservoir and perhaps even picnic on the shore.

This spot is popular with photographers for obvious reasons, but you can also often spy painters capturing the landscape. Don’t forget to bring your own camera to preserve your trip to this special Bay State landmark.
