The Massachusetts State Park That’s Built On The Ruins Of A Castle

Located in the town of Methuen, just before the New Hampshire border, Greycourt State Park is just as rich in history as it is in natural beauty. Greycourt State Park is a 24-acre green space located in Methuen.

This park was built around the restored ruins of the Charles H. Tenney estate, also called the Tenney Castle.

The Tenney Castle was built in 1890 and modeled after a famous French chateau.

It was the seat of the Tenney family, a prominent New England clan headed by Charles H. Tenney, one of the most successful merchants and hat dealers in the world.

Today, the park is a beautiful place to roam and relax. Though most of the castle is gone, the beautiful arches and foundations of one wing remain intact.

The historic castle gatehouse is still standing, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

You can climb all over the restored ruins and let your imagination paint a picture of the former castle.

The park is open from dawn until dusk, and offers wooded walking trails and scenic landscapes. The area is well-maintained, so it’s the perfect spot for a blanket picnic or some laid-back lawn games. Birdwatchers will have a great time spotting local wildlife, and there’s plenty of soft grass for kids to roll around in. Greycourt Park also plays host to plenty of awesome events like the Festival of Trees around the holidays.

The park can be a bit tricky to find, but that just means it’s pretty much immune to crowds. To locate the park, try parking behind Methuen City Hall and walking down the path next to the historical center. You’ll spot the park in no time.
