Maryland’s Infamous Ghost Fleet Is Slowly Drifting Away And It’s Fascinating
Mallows Bay in Maryland is home to the largest shipwreck fleet in the western hemisphere, attracting kayakers to explore its historic remnants.
The largest shipwreck fleet in the western hemisphere is located in Maryland, and it's said to be slowly moving...
Mallows Bay is located in Southern Maryland, right next to the Potomac River.
There are over 230 ships at this site, most of which were built during World War I. Many were deemed unusable, so they were set aflame and left abandoned in Mallows Bay.
Today, kayakers come from all over to paddle among this unique and historic site.
Many of the remnants rest just below the surface...
...while a handful stick out among the bay, showing off their rustic and deteriorating details.
According to Live Science,
it was recently discovered that some of the ships continue to drift away from the mainland, possibly up to 20 miles!
And the most fascinating part is that this discovery was made by a class of fifth graders from the nearby J.C. Parks Elementary School. The class looked at old images on Google Earth to determine the movement.
The cause is likely from heavy storms, floods, and erosion that very slowly move the ships year by year.
No fear -- the Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay isn't likely to completely disappear. We recommend a trip for all Marylanders at least once because the attached photos do not do it justice.
