As soon as colder weather hits Maine, we're ready for the holidays. During some particularly chilly years, that might mean garland in September, but that's all part of the fun of living here! Then, when the official holiday season begins, we're more than ready to participate in the festivities. For many, that means soaking up as many holiday light displays as we can. There's no shortage of dazzling Christmas lights in Maine to explore, but this one in Winthrop is more than just gorgeous. It can also be enjoyed from the cozy warmth of your car!

During Maine's warmer months, Augusta West Kampground in Winthrop offers all the fun of the outdoors. When life gets cold in these parts, though, the fun often shuts down as residents settle in for a long winter. But not at Augusta West! Here, the magic continues well into winter's chill.

This season, a visit to Augusta West means experiencing all of the sparkle and cheer that comes with the holidays.

Located right on Annabessacook Lake, the campground offers the perfect backdrop for this holiday light show.

The idea came closer to reality when owner Kale Malmsten began working with SkyBox Holiday & Event Lighting on a plan for lighting up his family's campground.

The Winter Wonderland event, which takes place through the new year, features more than 200,000 lights stretching about a mile throughout the campground.

The team adds to the display regularly as they come up with new ideas.

Best of all, visitors can choose to drive or walk through the lights, making this a safe, warm, and truly immersive experience. It's perfect for families, couples, small groups, and more!

A small team runs the entire show from the background, which is simply a testament to just how strong Mainers can be.

While there are other Christmas light shows in the state, this is one of the only displays in the region that allows for both driving and walking.

Bundle up, grab some hot chocolate, and make your plans to explore the August West grounds this season! You'll be sure to leave with some extra holiday cheer and plenty of festive new memories.

Not sure you can make it in person? Enjoy this walk-through to experience it as if you're there!
