Crossing This Covered Bridge In Maine Is Like Walking Through History

Maine is home to many hidden gems but we are particularly fond of its covered bridges. These unique structures create picture-perfect scenes that are incredibly romantic and make you fall in love with the Pine Tree State. And while there are covered bridges that are quite well known - like the Sunday River Bridge - one of our favorites is Babb’s Bridge. When you visit, it will feel like you are taking a walk through history.

Sitting over the Presumscot River is Babb’s Bridge. This gorgeous covered bridge connects Gorham and Windham and we encourage locals and out-of-state guests alike to pay this bridge a visit.

The bridge you see today is not as old as other covered bridges in Maine, but it sure has quite a unique history.

In 1840, Babb’s Bridge was built in the area and named after a local family. It was the oldest bridge in Maine. Unfortunately, in 1973, the historic bridge was destroyed by arson.

However, vandals could not completely take away this beloved community structure, and an exact replica was built and opened to traffic in 1976. This restored bridge is what you see today.

Babb’s Bridge is a single-span queen post truss bridge. It is 79 feet long and 13 feet, 9 inches wide.

Many individuals have vandalized and destroyed portions of the bridge, only for repairs to be made and for the beautiful structure to continue standing.

While Babb’s Bridge is beautiful all year long, we particularly love the summer when lush vegetation surrounds the bridge…

…and in the fall when vibrant fall colors create a scene that is mesmerizing.

There's no doubt that Babb’s Bridge in Maine is a structure the community loves and after a visit, you will as well.
