In 1992, the St. Tammany Parish government purchased the abandoned Illinois Central Railroad corridor and paved 31 miles of it, turning railroad trestles into pedestrian bridges and also adding a separate equestrian trail that runs parallel to the Trace in several spots.

Louisiana’s only rail-to-trail conversion attracts countless visitors from all over the state.

This epic 31-mile trail winds through five towns, offering beautiful scenery along the way.

The trail stretches through Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, and Lacombe, before ending in Slidell.
