More Than 50,000 People Attend The Yearly Delcambre Shrimp Festival In Louisiana And It’s Not Hard To See Why

Delcambre is a tiny town in both Iberia and Vermilion Parishes that’s home to less than 2,000 people, but it’s also home to one of the best festivals in Louisiana, the Delcambre Shrimp Festival. Delcambre is perfectly situated on Bayou Carlin (also known as the Delcambre canal) which gives boats access to the deeper fishing and shrimper waters found in Vermilion Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Delcambre has been a hub for the seafood industry in Louisiana for generations, so it’s only natural that this little fishing town holds the annual Delcambre Shrimp Festival to celebrate one of Louisiana’s most iconic foods.

The five-day festival kicks off on August 16 and runs until August 20, 2023.

You can purchase individual passes when you arrive.

There’s a full schedule of events for each day. Look for it to be updated for 2023 as the date draws nearer.

Keep in mind the gates don’t open until 6:30 p.m. on the first three days of the festival (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday); however, Saturday, August 19 and Sunday, August 20 are both full-day events, and the gates will open at 9 a.m.

The festival began in 1950 as a way to generate funds for the Delcambre Fire Department.

It quickly grew in popularity and has become one of the top 10 festivals in Louisiana, with proceeds going to more than just the fire department, but the entire community.

The festival continues many of the traditions from the early days of the festival, including the blessing of the boats.

The tradition began in 1953 and continues every year! A local pastor will come and bless the boats prior to the festival, asking for the protection of the crew and a bountiful harvest.

Adrenaline junkies will have a blast riding all of the thrilling carnival rides.

The festival has both kid-friendly and adult rides, ensuring a good time for everyone!

And of course, a festival isn't a festival unless there's music, and the Delcambre Shrimp Festival is jam-packed with talented musicians.
