Winchester Is a Walkable City in Kentucky Known for Its Historic Sites

There's no better way to see a new city than on foot. Strolling a city's streets gives you a feel for its character, whether on a warm summer morning or a chilly fall afternoon. I love stumbling upon hidden gems while walking around an unfamiliar city, like a local coffee shop, tiny urban park, or streetside cafe. Winchester, Kentucky, is a wonderful walkable city about 25 miles southeast of Lexington.

One of Winchester's most walkable areas is its historic downtown. Main Street and the nearby streets of Broadway Street, Cleveland Avenue, Court Street, Lexington Avenue, and Ogden Court have several buildings with interesting pasts. The Kerr Building, on the corner of Main and Broadway, was built in the late 1800s as a hub for local business. The Pastime Theater on Main Street saw a terrible tragedy in 1918 when a wall next to the theater collapsed and killed 16 people. The building at 127 North Main Street is in the scenes of two movies: "The Flim-Flam Man" and "Black Beauty."

The Clark County Courthouse on South Main Street is a stunning white building with a clock at its peak. It is the city's third courthouse building, finished in 1821, where Henry Clay argued his last law case in 1849. Behind the building, visitors can enjoy E.M. Vesquesney's bronze statue, The Doughboy, dedicated to Clark County residents who sacrificed their lives in the First World War.

Other historic buildings in the downtown area include the Bluegrass Heritage Museum, First United Methodist Church, the McEldowney House, and the Winchester Opera House. The architectural building at 41 South Main Street was once The Bloomfield Department Store, a prominent Winchester establishment until the 1980s, and is now Winchester Insurance.

After a historic walk around Winchester, visitors can enjoy a delicious meal at Loma's, Beer Cheese Trail, or Maka Mia on Main. The Happy Corner Winchester is a cafe on Main Street serving shakes, coffee, boba drinks, and more. A short drive away are two riverfront Winchester restaurants: Halls on the River and the Waterfront Grille and Gathering, which provide diners with fantastic meals near the scenic Kentucky River.

The area is also fantastic for shopping, with shops like Laura's Mercantile and The HighSide Boutique. Eklektic Academy and Mason on Main both sell antiques on Main Street.

Winchester has much to offer outside of its historic downtown area. It's near the Daniel Boone National Forest, Red River Gorge, and Fort Boonesborough State Park. It's easy to have an exciting afternoon at any of these Kentucky sites!
