Enjoy The Simple Life When You Visit This Tiny Rural Community In Kentucky

Both of my grandparents are from the small town of Brooksville, Kentucky -- in fact, they grew up only a few minutes from each other. Throughout my childhood, we would make the pilgrimage down to Bracken County to take in the sights and appreciate the simplicity of this rural Kentucky town. My brothers and I were blown away to see a town where there was just one main restaurant, one gas station, and a tight-knit community where everyone seemed to know everyone. Only at my older age have I grown to really appreciate these charming factors of the small town that holds my family lineage. These days, I still pack up the car and hit the road for an annual visit to Brooksville, Kentucky, to get some of the best sweet tea I’ve ever tasted and meet new members of the community.

Brooksville itself was settled right around the year 1800 by William and Joel Woodward. The area was originally known as Woodward's Crossroads and became Brooksville in 1833.

Today, this town celebrates its history with numerous events and traditions. One fun homage the town of Brooksville brings to life is an annual vintage baseball game in which players are required to play by the rules of 1869 baseball. Seeing the old-timey uniforms and players committing to the rules of the 1800s is always a fun activity!

If there's one thing you can speak to about the town of Brooksville, it's their patriotism. This rural locale is a town of folks who are truly proud to be Americans.

To that end, a town parade is a perfect way to see the community in action. As is the case with several small-towns in the Bluegrass State, the people of Brooksville look for any chance they can to come together, and parades are a regular occurrence...

....as are open air markets and farmer's stalls. You know you are in a small-town when you see a stand like this. Fresh preserves are one of life's most simple and spectacular pleasures.

And, of course, when fall rolls around, there is nothing I enjoy more than a homemade caramel apple.
