The Charming Kentucky General Store That’s Been Open Since Before The Civil War
Penn's Store in Gravel Switch, Kentucky, is a historic general store known for its long history, community events, and unique features like the annual outhouse race.
As one of the first 15 states to join our nation, Kentucky certainly has its share of charming old general stores. But one, in particular, stands out not only for its merchandise but also its history. Penn's Store has been around since 1845, predating the Civil War.
Penn's Store is located at 257 Penn's Store Rd. in the tiny town of Gravel Switch.
It has been owned by the Penn family since 1850, but its history can be traced back to 1845.
The store has a spot on the National Register of Historic Places - and for good reason.
Long ago, former owner Dick Penn was a dentist, druggist, and the community's first postmaster. Penn's Store carried a wide variety of medicine, and there was even a rumor that Penn had a cure for skin cancer. However, he never revealed the secret cure, which he said he received from a foreign doctor.
These days, Penn's carries more decorative decor than pharmaceuticals...
...but people tend to come here more for the community than the products.
Aside from the items stocking the shelves, Penn's Store also hosts regular jam sessions and other special events.
Another unique feature, Penn's Privy, was built in 1992 and it is the store's first and only restroom.
When Penn's Privy arrived, the family was so excited that they started the Great Outhouse Blowout, an annual outhouse race, to celebrate.
As Penn's Store is such a small family-owned business, its open hours occasionally vary due to non-business circumstances.
