Why Keeneland is One of My Favorite Places in the State of Kentucky

Every time I write about a place I've visited in Kentucky, it feels like a love letter. Since moving to this state (from right across the river in Cincinnati) almost two decades ago, my heart has slowly transformed into bluegrass. Every state has its faults, but there is so much to love about Kentucky.

I live about an hour from Lexington, so we often take advantage of some of the fun events that take place in this charming city. Every October and April, we make sure to plan a day at Keeneland. Whether it's just my husband and I or with a group of friends that arrives on a bus, we love our time at both the Fall and Spring Meets. This October, we celebrated a friend's birthday at this iconic Bluegrass destination and I was once again reminded why it is one of my favorite places in Kentucky.

Racing at Keeneland takes place in October and April and you can learn all about it on their website. This is what the destination is known for and the reason I've visited for the past few years, but Keeneland offers so much more and all year long! More on that in a minute.

Races at Keeneland are rain or shine and I've seen it all! One April it was snowing and then this past October it was 70 degrees with the most perfect blue skies. No matter the weather, Keeneland holds a magic that is purely Kentucky.

If you've never been to Keeneland, let me tell you a little bit about what to expect. First off, especially if the forecast looks good, you'll want to buy tickets ahead of time. General Admission can definitely sell out! These tickets get you access to all of the main areas, but you can also purchase Reserved Grandstand seats (covered!) or splurge on tickets to one of the dining rooms. And a day at Keeneland is more affordable than you may think. General Admission tickets start at just $7 for weekday races. All pricing and tips for getting the right tickets can be found on the Keeneland website.

Once you have your tickets reserved, it's time to decide how you want to experience your day at Keeneland. You can simply drive yourself, park, and walk in and spend the day on the gorgeous grounds, taking in the races. Many visitors arrive early and park in a designated lot and tailgate for a bit before going in for the races. There are shuttle options to get you closer to the entrance and this is an especially fun way to take full advantage of a gorgeous day in Lexington.

Once you do make your way inside, you'll want to try the specialty drinks and food that round out this purely Kentucky experience. While I love watching the races (and trying my luck with a bet or two), my favorite thing about Keeneland is the atmosphere. The people watching - the outfit watching - the perfectly landscaped design, the classic southern touches, and of course the beautiful horses.

Speaking of outfits, you'll see a little bit of everything at Keeneland. It's not quite the Derby, but it's not a football game, either. You'll see dresses, suit coats, and a hat or several. But always be sure to dress for comfort and for the weather; it can be a long (fun) day!

In addition to racing, there are plenty of other events and things to do at Keeneland all year long. Horse sales are a big part of Keeneland's purpose and I find them fascinating. In fact, Keeneland’s 2024 September Yearling Sale just became the highest-grossing Thoroughbred auction in history, with over $405.5 million in sales. Let that sink in for a minute.

Keeneland also offers tours year-round and one event that I'd especially love to try is the Holiday Tea at the Clubhouse. A "Keeneland Crafted Event," the Holiday Tea at the Clubhouse would be such a fun tradition to begin this year with friends. Tickets are available for December 15 - 17 and the event includes a gourmet high tea luncheon, live holiday music, and time to visit the lovely Keeneland gift shop to take care of any holiday shopping.

I am already looking forward to the next time I am able to visit Keeneland, whether it's for a day at the races with friends or for an event throughout the year. The track itself is exciting, but the overall atmosphere at this classic Kentucky destination is what makes it one of my favorite places in the state.
