The Walkable Iowa Town That’s Known for Its Thriving Arts District

Looking for the perfect place in Iowa to explore without a car? Iowa City is the state's most walkable town.

Hidden away in Johnson County in the state's eastern reaches is the town of Iowa City, Iowa. Despite its somewhat repetitive moniker, it's a small paradise, and for those who prefer not to travel by vehicle for any assortment of reasons, it's about as close to perfect as it gets. Iowa City is a wonderful addition to anyone's to-do list, with lots of must-see museums to explore and a vibrant arts district unlike anywhere else in the state.

You can start almost anywhere in town and walk to where you'd like to go, and if you don't feel like walking, the public transportation system here is excellent. This small town in Iowa could become your new favorite vacation destination; the list of things to do in Iowa City is long (and fun).

First and foremost, this town has remarkably wondrous arts and cultural districts. From galleries to museums and everything in between, you can meander just about anywhere and find the perfect way to spend an afternoon (or three). I highly recommend a visit to the University of Iowa's Stanley Museum of Art, where there's always something new and amazing going on. Iowa City is one of a handful of arts-focused towns in the state, and the art museum is a great place to begin. From there, check out the Iowa Artisans Gallery, Taag Studios, and all the other one-of-a-kind art galleries just minutes away.

For history lovers, there is an assortment of other museums that might be of interest, like the Old Capitol Museum or the Museum of Natural History. Shoppers will adore the smorgasbord of cute mom-and-pop shops you can only find in town. And foodies, prepare for the best food coma of your life: There are dozens of incredible dining options in Iowa City.

A few of my favorite must-do spots include the incredible DeLuxe Cakes and Pastries, which might just be the best bakery in all of Iowa (which is really saying something). But first, have lunch at Orchard Green, a restaurant that is a work of art in and of itself.

Thrift store surfers, never fear: There's plenty for you here, too! Check out the Crowded Closet for some of the Midwest's best thrifting. It's a short meander from all the other spots mentioned in this article - the whole point is that the town is walkable! Truly, the list of awesome things to do and experience while you're here is delightfully long - you'll never have a boring moment.

If you plan to visit this wonderful little Iowa town known as Iowa City, you'll need somewhere awesome to stay. Luckily, there are tons of incredible rentaly nearby.
