1. Field of Dreams

The Field of Dreams is a baseball field and pop-culture tourist attraction built originally for the movie of the same name. It is in Dubuque County.

2. Where the music died

This is the site of the Buddy Holly plane crash. It’s a sweet little tribute. Four trees were planted along the fence line; one for each person that died in the crash.

3. Oakland Cemetery’s black angel

Kiss the black angel and be struck dead. It’s never really happened, but that’s the local legend.

4. Fenelon Place Elevator

It’s the steepest and shortest railroad on earth and you can take a ride in Dubuque. The elevator operates between April and November.

5. Barn Quilts

There are more than 60 of these beautiful barn quilts on display throughout the countryside around Grundy City, Wellsburg, and Conrad.

6. It’s the biggest truck stop in the world!

This epic destination has eight restaurants, a game room, on-site dentist, barber, and several semis on display inside the building.

7. Pottawattamie Squirrel Cage Jail

Yeah, it’s weird. This rotary jail is a sight to behold and definitely worth the trip.

8. Bily Clocks

The Bily Clocks Museum & Antonin Dvorak Exhibit is in Spillville. It’s an inspiring display of years’ worth of work.

9. Have you met Elwood? He’s the world’s biggest garden gnome.

You’ll have to walk through the beautiful Reiman Gardens in Ames to see this 15-foot-tall gnome.
