Did You Know Iowa Is Home To The World’s Only Fully Enclosed Wooden Roller Coaster?

I love a good amusement park, and it's great to see the way they're constantly trying to one-up each other with bigger and better rides. But there's something about those old vintage parks that continues to stand out year after year. That's where you find truly one-of-a-kind rides that still manage to surprise - and Iowa has a great one at Adventureland in Altoona. First opened in 1996, The Underground is definitely the most unique roller coaster in Iowa - in fact, it's the only ride of its kind in the world! This fully indoor, immersive, mine-themed wooden roller coaster combines thrills with visual effects - at least it did until it closed for refurbishment. But fear not, this thrilling descent into the depths is scheduled to reopen for the Adventureland 2024 season with new flourishes but the same great one-of-a-kind ride.

Adventureland is the biggest and best amusement park in Iowa, so it's no surprise it's crowded in the summer.

Dozens of rides, including some of the most thrilling roller coasters in the Midwest, await amusement lovers.

But there's one ride here has always carried an aura of mystery mystery it. Are you ready to head into...The Underground?

An intricately themed, fully-indoor thrill ride that takes riders in search of the legendary outlaw Bad Bob, it's a one-of-a-kind ride.

Riders board mine trains and embark on a wooden roller coaster through dark twists and turns.

Expect to see audio-animatronic Western displays, and quite a few thrills and surprises along the way.

The ride has been undergoing a major refurbishment, but it will be restored and reopened for 2024 - with some new surprises from Bad Bob along the way, most likely!
