Some of the most stunning examples of architecture across the world are all types of religious buildings, from churches to temples to basilicas. While Europe gets a lot of credit for gorgeous architecture, there is a jaw-dropping basilica right in your own backyard...and it will leave you breathless.
South Bend is known for the highly regarded University of Notre Dame, not just for its academics and sports prowess, but also for its amazing architecture and design. Within this revered campus is a stunning building in its own right - the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic church, which also serves as the mother church to the entire Congregation of Holy Cross in the country. Its neo-gothic design is quite unique and certainly amazing to behold in person.
This stunning basilica has a bell tower which stands 218 feet tall, the tallest of all college chapels in the country. The church was constructed in the 1870s and was finally consecrated nearly 18 years later. The church officially became a basilica in 1992, when Pope John Paul II raised its status in the Catholic ranks.
Whether you're Catholic or not, it's easy to appreciate this breathtaking building for the incredible work of art it is. In fact, more than 50,000 people visit this basilica every year and it is often ranked in the country's top most beautiful church buildings.
The basilica contains over 100 stained glass windows, and across these windows are over 1,200 panels. These amazing window panels took over 15 years to make and were created by nuns from Le Mans in France. Since most of France's artifacts during this era have been destroyed, these stained glass windows are a truly priceless piece of this famous basilica.
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is truly a one-of-a-kind gem that every Hoosier should be proud to live near. In order to fully appreciate the intricate details of this stunning building, you absolutely have to visit in person.
