The Unreal Destination in Indiana Where the Drive is Worth the Final View

Drive up to Indiana Dunes National Park and check out Mount Tom - and all the incredible things you can see from there.

Hidden away at Indiana Dunes National Park in the far northwestern part of the Hoosier State is a series of amazing sand dunes (yes, you read that right - sand dunes!) surpassing even the wildest dreams of nature lovers. There are several amazing mature dunes throughout the park along the shores of Lake Michigan worth checking out. Still, there's one in particular that offers epic views 100% worthy of driving from across the entire state to experience.

Mount Tom rises 760 feet above Lake Michigan and, as a result, you can see the gorgeous Chicago skyline and endless waves on the surface of the water - which is always clear, crisp, and aquamarine.

This dune is named after Lt. Tom Brady, a soldier during the Revolutionary War who led a raid from Cahokia, in Illinois, against British-allied Indian Natives in what is now Michigan. A battle occurred here at the dunes when the Natives followed (and captured) him nearby.

Nowadays, things are a bit quieter, to say the least.

I'm not sure what part of this incredible landscape view is even my favorite; sure, it's cool to be able to see Chicago from here, but goodness, that water. This is one of those amazing places that feel more like the Caribbean than the Midwest, and Mount Tom is the best way to enjoy it.

To get into Indiana Dunes National Park, standard passes are $15 to $25; annual passes are $45, and they make a lot of sense if you plan to revisit again and again.

In the summer, the place is typically buzzing. It's a very popular destination for Hoosiers and tourists alike, and Mount Tom is a favorite for most. It's the tallest remaining sand dune in the entire state of Indiana, and to say it's beautiful is to undersell it a smidge.

There are a couple of wonderful hiking trails that will lead you right up to the summit of Mt. Tom, as long as you've got the motivation to get up there (it's a bit challenging). If you're extra motivated, you can do the epic multi-dune adventure known as Indiana Dunes Trail 8 to Trail 4 Loop. You'll encounter three dunes - including Mt. Tom - and the views from each are nothing short of incredible.
