White River State Park Has a Secret That Most Indiana Visitors Never Find

Leave the car at home. Instead, explore a tranquil canal on a swan boat or gondola at this hidden gem destination in Indianapolis.

White River State Park in Indianapolis is by far one of the most unique destinations in Indiana. At least, in my humble opinion. Famously recognized as “America's only urban cultural state park,” this bustling oasis is jam-packed with lots of attractions. We can’t get enough of the dreamy sunrises and sunsets here, but this outdoor playground has much more to offer.

With its Canal Walk, a zoo and botanical garden, museums, and concert venues, the park is a hot spot for family-friendly fun. Moreover, I think this 250-acre oasis becomes extra magical in the summer, when the canal is filled with swan boats and gondolas. Can you imagine drifting down the tranquil waterways while soaking up the views of the Indy skyline? If this sounds like an enchanting adventure, this scenic boat ride in Indiana is the perfect summertime activity for you.

Tucked in the heart of downtown Indy, you won’t find deep canyons or rugged mountains here. So, obviously, White River State Park is not your average state park. It’s secret weapon? The Central Canal and the three-mile loop around it. The canal was originally built to improve trade in the area and connect to the Ohio River. Today, fully restored, the canal and its paved trail (the White River Canal Walk) are popular spots for Hoosiers and visitors seeking a unique attraction.

There are several ways to enjoy the urban oasis. On any given day, you’ll find lots of folks running, walking, or biking along the 3-mile trail. Since the trail is fully paved, it’s great for moms with strollers and wheelchair users too. It’s kid and dog-friendly, so don’t leave them behind for this outdoor adventure. Along the way, visitors can check out art installations as well as the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial.

Sure, hiking the trail can be quite rewarding, but the best way to explore the park is from the canal. During warmer months, parkgoers can take a break from the heat and cool off with a float down the scenic waterway. You'll find several options for exploring the serene canal.

Operated by Wheel Fun Rentals, guests can rent hourly kayaks or swan pedal boats. For extra adventure, opt for the 2.5-hour seasonal (from June to September) kayak tour, where you’ll learn the history of the area and see all the iconic memorials, the breathtaking murals, and the museums in the park. If you’re in search of a more intimate excursion, choose the five-passenger swan boat instead. Couples or families can enjoy a dreamy float, especially at sunset, when the city comes alive with the twinkling lights.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! Take your experience to the next level by booking a ride with a singing gondolier. While floating on the tranquil canal, listening to classic Italian tunes, you could easily get lost in the dreamy moment. I could imagine myself believing that I'm in Venice while soaking up the views along the canal.

Open seasonally, from April to October, Old World Gondoliers, which operates the iconic canal boats, promises a classic Italian experience. Let your imagination take you to the European shores as you marvel at the beauty and charm of downtown Indy. You can choose from 30-minute public or 30 to 60-minute private gondola rides, and they offer yacht cruises, too. Moreover, themed trips are available, and guests love celebrating special occasions on the water vessels as well. The best part? You can bring a bottle of wine and refreshments to enjoy as you float along the waterway.

All rides vary in price and operate on a schedule; therefore, be sure to check the White River State Park Fansite for more information. Also, wear comfy clothing—or dress to impress if you're celebrating a special occasion. If you’re exploring the canal in the middle of the day, don’t forget to apply sunscreen.

Of course, once you’re done with your canal excursion, you’ll want to check out the cultural attractions in the park. The kids will love seeing the animals at the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens. Sports fans, stop by the NCAA Hall of Champions. History buffs and art lovers, don’t miss the Eiteljorg Museum. Whether you’re floating along the iconic canal or checking out the local attractions, I bet you’ll find something to love about this Indiana state park.
