From Native American burial mounds to museums, this bucket list of historical activities is unforgettable. Check it out:

1. Gramercy Park

Overlooking the Mississippi River, this bluff-top oasis is a a historical attraction. There are 26 Native American burial mounds used by the Hopewell tribes between 200 and 500 CE. Fun things to do here include hiking, taking photos, enjoying the pavilion, and playing on the playground. It is located at Beecher St., East Dubuque, IL 61025.

2. Cahokia Mounds

This is the most well-known of Illinois' prehistoric attractions. Located in Collinsville, this historic site is directly across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. It spans 2,200 acres and is home to about 80 mounds. A Historical National Landmark, this place is perfect for hiking, views of the river, and history lessons.

3. Dickson Mounds

This is a lesser-known Native Indiana burial ground that is fun to visit as it also includes a museum. There are about 10 mounds as well as two cemeteries and a platform mound, which is flat on the top. The museum opened in 1972 and is operated by the Illinois State Museum. 4. Piasa Bird

Though the original no longer exists, you can still see what this infamous limestone bluff along the Mississippi River used to look like. The painting depicts a Native American dragon, and it was likely used to warn intruders. Rumor has it that this creature only eats human flesh. It is located in Alton along Wise Street.

5. Hauburg Indian Museum

Part of the Black Hawk Historic Site, this museum sits on sacred land that once belonged to Illinois' most prominent tribes. It features many trails that follow the Rock River as well as a fur trading exhibit. Enjoy this collection of prehistoric artifacts Wednesday through Sunday at 1800 46th Ave., Rock Island, IL 61201.

6. Mitchell Museum of the American Indian

One of the only museums in the state that focuses exclusively on Native American history, this place features the culture and arts of North American natives in general.
